The Texas Women’s Classic at Lewisville High School has firmly established itself as one of the premier events for girls’ wrestling in Texas. Credit to the tournament organizers, who have dedicated themselves to spotlighting female athletes, with 60+ teams competing this year. The level of competition is second to none, drawing some of the best wrestlers from across the state.
Houston is represented by two standout programs—Bryan and Cypress Creek—at the Texas Women’s Classic, and we felt it was worth covering this event given the high-caliber wrestlers set to compete. Among them are a few of our top-ranked girls, each facing stiff competition.
107 lbs – Katelynn Dockery (Bryan)
Though she’s just a freshman, Dockery has already made a major impact this season, showing that her potential is limitless. This 107-pound bracket at the Texas Women’s Classic will be a fascinating test for her, as she faces a mix of veteran and up-and-coming talent.
Two returning state medalists headline this bracket. Berkley Funderburg from Dumas placed 5th in 5A at 107 pounds last season, while Matti Givens from Allen took 5th in 6A at 100 pounds. On paper, these two are the favorites to contend for the top spot. However, there are also three other state qualifiers to watch: Ashlyn Lewis (Eaton), Annie Reeder(Coppell), and Vanessa Sixtos (Grand Prairie), all of whom will bring tough competition to the mat.
As of the writing of this preview, Dockery has already secured a win in her opening match, setting up an exciting second-round showdown with Allessandra Toscano from El Paso Eastwood. Toscano, also a freshman, has an impressive youth wrestling background, having placed at several national tournaments.
This is a loaded weight class, and for the Bryan freshman phenom, it will be a true test of her skill and poise under pressure. Fans will be eager to see how Dockery matches up against this talented field of wrestlers.
120 lbs – #2 Chamille Bryson (Cypress Creek)
Bryson has been to the state tournament twice in her career, earning a 3rd place finish at the Berry Center last season. She’s undefeated so far this year and is known for dispatching opponents in under a minute. At this tournament, there are two major competitors who could challenge her for the top spot.
One of the top contenders is Erin Marquez from Princeton, who made her mark at the 5A state tournament last year, picking up a couple of wins at the Berry Center. Princeton has moved up to 6A this year, so this could be a real test for both Marquez and Bryson if they meet in the semifinals.
The other major threat to Bryson is Akeelah Moore of Melissa. Moore, a favorite for the state title last season, ultimately finished as runner-up. Ranked #10 nationally, she’s been dominating this year, with two victories over #1-ranked wrestler, Vanessa De La Cruz of College Park. If Bryson makes it to the finals, a matchup with Moore would be an exciting showdown.
